As a sophisticated, modern college for the study of depth astrology, the OCA’s curriculum is under constant evolution. Ena Stanley, the President and founder, and we on the OCA staff, are committed to keeping apace with growth and breakthroughs in the national and international astrological scene. At the same time, we have a respect for the traditions that allow this growth its breadth. The arrangement of classes today is much different than it was two years ago, for example. And two years hence will doubtless see a further evolved arrangement. Below you will find an outline of the growth direction of our class schedule and curriculum. The “Diploma Module”, unlike the “Natal Studies Module” preceding it, is not comprised of 7 semesters of 9 weeks each. Instead, there are three required courses -- DPL01 Forecasting, DPL02 Timing, DPL03 Rectification -- which introduce the student to predictive and sundry techniques. Then we launch into a series of courses that are needed to complete a comprehensive education. Too, there is rigorous and required testing at the end of each of these courses, solidifying the knowledge and practice necessary to proceed. There are often quizzes in the interim to strengthen teacher/student rapport and aid in one-to-one guidance. Only after passing through all these courses can a student enter the last semester to graduate. This class begins the preparation for client consultations. The student will learn how the slower moving planetary cycles, transits, secondary progressions, solar arc directions, and eclipses pin point the major themes that are occurring. Beyond theory, the student will understand through hind sight how these slow moving influences stack up to set the stage for life's major events. Delving into 4 different past events in the lives of them self and their 3 work charts, practical, hands on knowledge is gained. In class we will apply the techniques to a famous person in the news with a current event much like ones clients come to astrologers for. We will examine how the astrology is represented in the physical event and also the psychological or spiritual paradigm behind the life event that is ready to shift in the direction of growth. We will discuss what life lesson is being learned, how we might help to facilitate growth from the lesson, and look forward in time to see when the person will be through the event. |

Class Meeting 1: Overview and Planetary Cycles This section takes the student into a deeper understanding of the planetary cycles, building upon their knowledge from the Natal Studies Module. The student is asked to relate planetary cycles to his/her own life and that of three others whom he/she knows well. The goal is to learn by observing the dynamics of the cycles in actual lives. Class Meeting 2: Synodic Cycles There is a continuation of the planetary cycles, where students are introduced to the Synodic Returns and the four major phases of the synodic cycle. The cycles that are covered are first from Jupiter out, then from Saturn out. We will touch on a bit of mundane astrology as we see how these synodic cycles play out in the world at large. We will then take that observation to a personal level and examine the cycles in the lives of our study charts. Class Meeting 3: Graphic Ephemeris This class explores the 45 degree graphic ephemeris and the declination graphic in our software. This visual aid to transits and progressions is an effective tool for defining and examining major periods in life. Class Meeting 4: Outer Planet Transits Transiting factors and their synchronistic relationship to natal factors are examined in depth during these two weeks. Again, the student is asked via homework to trace outer planet transits for important life events, in order to gain a profound sense of their workings. The transits of their other work charts, mentioned above, are also examined. The student will understand that Pluto, Neptune & Uranus transits always hit our planets three times due to their yearly retrogradation. The stacking of times when two or more of these are active at once sets a stage in both context of events and in time. Using the 4 study charts the students will define the major theme and time frame for the event. Class Meeting 5: Secondary Progressions The student will learn the theory behind day-for-a-year, and the assorted techniques for calculating the ACD. This quickly becomes second nature, as homework assignments require the student to repeatedly calculate and set up progressed charts without the use of the computer. The ACD is a valuable tool to determine quickly when a natal planet changes direction, ingresses into a new sign, and more. In addition to calculating the ACD, the student will learn to calculate the progressed house cusps, and how to pull the planet positions right from the midnight ephemeris. The delineation portion of this assignment will focus on the events in the study charts to see how the secondary progressed aspects are backing up the theme discovered by the outer planet transits. An understanding of the speed of progressed planets is learned as the student discovers that orbs become time rather than degrees. For example progressed Saturn remains in the same degree for a minimum of 8 years while the progressed Sun, Mercury and Venus remain in one degree for aproximately one year. Class Meeting 6: Solar Arc Directions This week the student will learn the theory behind advancing the natal chart at the rate of the sun. We will explore the significance of the solar arc chart at age 30, 45, 60, and 90 when the solar arc chart makes aspect of those degrees to the natal. The student will calculate a solar arc directed chart for each of their events. Delineation will show how yet again the major theme of the event is evident in solar arc directions. We will also compare the similaritiees and differences in the information we get from secondary progressions and solar directions. Class Meeting 7: Eclipses Both Solar and Lunar Eclipses signal an emphasis to the affairs of the house contacted for the period from one eclipse of its kind to the next. For instance, a solar eclipse in the second house brings greater attention to budgeting, spending, saving and other related money issues. The influence lasts about six months until the next solar eclipse, which then emphasizes another house usually 170 degrees away on the other side of the horoscope. Lunar eclipses work in a similar fashion, but signals the emotional beginnings of what the solar eclipse brings to focus. Solar and Lunar Eclipses become especially important when they conjunct or oppose a natal planet or sensitive point in the chart within a one to three degree orb. Of course, the one-degree orb is especially powerful in highlighting the issues related to the natal planet and its own close planetary aspects. Most astrologers do not consider the other aspects when working with eclipses. In this class the student will also be introduced to the Saros Series Cycle in both mechanics and meaning. We will explore how the birth chart of the saros series holds significance, much like we carry our natal chart through life, as we take that meaning into the current eclipse chart for additional information. The student will examine the eclipse cycle preceeding the events of their study charts and see how it too played a role in setting the stage for the theme at hand. Class Meeting 8: Solar Returns This week the student learns to calculate the solar return chart for the moment the sun returns to its natal position. The Solar Return is first examined in hind sight for a particular year of life for their study charts. The student will learn how the solar return indicators backed up by indicators of outer planet transits, solar arc directions and secondary progressions can provide confidence in the accuracy of their assessment as themes are repeated. Additionally, we will explore an astrological debate. Is it better to cast the Solar Return for your place of residence, or if you are away from home is it better to cast from that local? Students will be encouraged to recall a year where they or someone they know was out of town on at their Solar Return so they can compare both charts against what happened that year. We will also determine if any planetary returns are occuring around the chosen time frame to examine. We will explore the lunar return preceeding an event as well to learn what it has to offer. Class Meeting 9: Final Exam An important characteristic of a Final Exam is, of course, the testing of learned knowledge and how it is applied. Even more important, however, is that the taking of an exam be a learning process in and of itself. A well-constructed exam leaves the student with both a strong sense of confidence, and a clear picture of growth direction. This will be a take home exam, where the student is given a mystery chart and a one year time frame to explore. The student is to use all of the forecasting techniques learned in class to determine what happend that year. |
