Introduction to Traditional Astrology (Required Course)

14 Class Meetings
Prerequisites: This course is required for graduation in the Diploma Module. It can be taken in any order after the completion of ASTRO 103
Price: $650

Course Description:

Traditional astrology is also sometimes called "Classical" astrology. This refers to the post-Renaissance system that comes down to us through such seventeenth century astrologers as William Lily and John Gadbury. Yet, traditional astrology has its roots in Hellenistic astrology of 2nd century CE.

The focus of this introductory course is on the factors of horoscope analysis that identifies the strengths of planets through such concepts as sect, gender, dignity and topical influences. These concepts are usefully applied in natal, mundane, electional, and horary approaches to horoscope interpretation. The course is structured to apply each concept to a celebrity practice chart as well as the students own chart, layering as we move through the 14 weeks. The result will be a practical approach to assessing any type of chart to derive concise interpretive ideas. This course is open to EVERYONE. It will require only basic astrological knowledge of beginners, while it provides concepts that will strengthen interpretive skills of intermediate and practiced astrologers.

Syllabus:

Class Meeting 1: The Planets

The foundations of traditional astrology come from observation and reflection on nature. This first class explores the basics of temperament of the planets, sect, gender, planetary characteristics and significations. Ptolemy is our guide.

Class Meeting 2: Planetary Relationships to Signs

The second class incorporates the material of the first class with an exploration of the signs. We step through sect and gender considerations. We follow the connections between the characteristics and qualities of the planets and their relationship to the signs.

Class Meeting 3: Planetary Strengths

In week 3, we begin to combine what we have learned of planets and signs and apply this to the ways that planets are strengthened, or weakened. We will explore the dignities and debilities and how these establish the conditions of a chart.

Class Meeting 4: Power of the Moon

The Moon has its special concerns and powers. This class works through the ancient knowledge of Vettius Valens as our reference on lunar phases, prenatal syzygy, lunar nodes, and the Part of Fortune.

Class Meeting 5: The Basic Wheel of the Horoscope

Now that we have the foundation of planets and signs, we give them structure. In this class, we will learn about how the signs and houses become the fabric of the chart. This will lay the foundations for exploring the houses in the next lesson.

Class Meeting 6: The Houses as Topics of Life

This lesson begins to interweave the signs as the territory with the planets as owners or rulers of the land. We will work through the meanings of each house, giving depth to the interpretation by way of the connections of rulerships.

Class Meeting 7: Accidental Dignities

Now that we have the chart components, we will explore the ways that planets gain or lose strength by their placements. The accidental dignities often seem tedious to asses, but become natural to the astrologer by their logic.

Class Meeting 8: Aspects and Action

The interrelationship of the planets gives the action of life. We have had bits along the way in how the planets can operate through support or denial of action. This class will give attention to themes and aspect patterns.

Class Meeting 9: Seasons and Humors

This class will draw again on the foundations of the first two weeks. Going back to the qualities of hot, cold, wet, and dry, we explore the seasons and humors of the body. This material was a part of practical thinking by the seventeenth century.

Class Meeting 10: Minor Factors: Declination, Travel, Speed, Anticia

These minor factors contribute to the operations of the planets. These additional factors can be very useful in making determinations and in finding clues to hidden information in any chart.

Class Meeting 11: Steps to Analysis

This week we will summarize the material of this course into a working model of analysis. Here we will take the parts of our evaluation and assemble statements. We should conclude with some very clear and accurate interpretation of the factors.

Class Meeting 12: Practice 1: The Natal

This practice lesson applies our various factors of analysis to a natal chart that we have not previously explored.

Class Meeting 13: Practice 2 : The Election

This practice will apply the important factors to judging an election chart. We will review conditions and considerations that lend themselves to a successful venture.

Class Meeting 14: Practical Test

This will be the student's opportunity to bring their own biography to life. Through a questionnaire addressing the student's own chart, we will correlate life experience with chart statements.
