Introduction to Mesoamerican Astrology

Course Description:

Bruce Scofield's research and subsequent writings about Mesoamerican astrology surpasses any other in the world and Bruce has put his knowledge into a two part course. With a clear and insightful voice, he will, in this and the next course, synthesize the essential aspects of Mesoamerican and Western astrology.

This, the beginning course, will give you the keystone of the history and mythology of their civilization, developing the foundation for a full and comprehensive understanding of the Mesoamericn system of astrological symbols and time cycles. This course contains a richness, beauty and depth of meaning beyond anyone's initial expection.

Syllabus:

Class Meeting 1: Civilization in Mesoamerica: history, culture, major centers, and archaeoastronomy

Assignment:
Signs of Time chapters 1 and 2. Also begin Popol Vuh.

Class Meeting 2: Mesoamerican mythology - the Popol Vuh.

Assignment:
Popol Vuh

Class Meeting 3: Mesoamerican mythology (con't) - the Popol Vuh, the Five Suns, Gods and Goddesses.

Assignment:
finish Popol Vuh

Class Meeting 4: The Day Signs.

Assignment:
Signs of Time chapters 3 and 4

Class Meeting 5: The Day Signs, the Trecena, Lords of Night and Years.

Assignment:
Signs of Time chapter 5

Class Meeting 6: Quetzalcoatl and Venus.

Assignment:
Signs of Time chapter 6
